Let all-inclusive winter vacations melt your worries

If you're an all-inclusive novice, here are a few survival strategies to get the most out of your vacation:

The flight: When does the plane (usually a charter) leave? If you're an early riser, you may not mind arriving at the airport at the crack of dawn. For others, early departures are a non-starter. It never hurts to ask your travel agent if another flight is available that's not so early, says Pat Barry of Rainbow High Vacations in Toronto. "You may be surprised at your options." But a late flight to your destination means a late arrival -- and usually a late flight back home.

The room: On arrival, make sure your room is in working order because it's the starting point for your vacation. "Try everything in the room right away," Barry advises. "Try the air conditioning, the TV, check the safe and the water in the bath. If there's anything wrong, go immediately to the front desk. Chances are there are still rooms that haven't been filled." It's harder to change rooms after you've been there a day or more, he says.
